Hey, Sheriffs Play Poker Too!

In North Carolina today, a federal prosecutor says that more charges are likely in an investigation into a bribery scheme. Several officers and even the sheriff himself have been implicated in the case and Assistant US Attorney Richard Edwards says to expect even more names to come out. In July of 2007 payouts from poker machines were outlawed in the state. Despite that ruling, many operators continued to run their poker machine operations illegally.

To keep those machines running, most of the remaining operators simply bribed officers to let them continue collecting bets and paying out winnings to clients. Unfortunately, the Feds began taking a look into the bribery scheme not long after the law was passed outlawing the machines in 2007. With many of the operators now cooperating with Federal authorities in the hopes of reducing their sentences, there may be even higher ranking officials named in the probe although there’s no official comment regarding this.

We will continue to report on this developing story and release details as they become available.
