Michael Phelps Chases More Gold at Caesars Palace
Most folks have heard by now that Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps is a big poker fan. Since stating after the Olympics that he’d like to play at the World Series of Poker in 2009, the press has jumped on the story. He’s met with Doyle Brunson and other poker elite and apparently has been coached very well so far.
Just six weeks after taking up temporary residence in Las Vegas, the shark also known as Michael Phelps has made a final table. Out lasting all but eight of the players in the 187 player field, Phelps took ninth place at the Sunday $1,570 buy-in tournament at Caesars. A small win but a strong demonstration of what focus and hard work can do when someone applies himself or herself to a mission.
It will be interesting to see how well Phelps does long term in this game. If he’s able to make a successful run and go deep in a few events, there will certainly be much talk about how well one can be “coached” to be a better poker player. I’m taking the under on how long it will be before some online coaching site and/or a major poker room brings him on as a celebrity endorser.
