You’d think hosting a million dollar tournament in an exotic locale like Aruba would attract the games best, right? Well I suppose you’d be correct if you consider Johan Storakers, Matt Brady, Jeffrey Papola, Allie Prescott, and Brian Malczewski the best in poker. Those are the chip leaders going into the final table match at this years Main Event.
The $5,000 event unfortunately faces off against the European Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker Europe events this week. With the 10-12 hour flight to bounce between the two, it just doesn’t make sense for pros to make the trip. The prestige is all in London, the sun is in Aruba. The money is in London, the sand is in Aruba. The sun and sand aren’t going anywhere but the money will. That’s easy math for big pros like John Juanda, Phil Ivey, Mike Matusow, and many others.
The cheating scandal probably plays a role as well here, with Russ Hamilton being named as the mastermind behind the scandal just this week by the KGC. Coincidence that it took place right before the Aruba event, maybe. At the end of the day though, it may be the beginning of the end for Ultimate Bet.
