Galen Hall wins Caribbean Adventure
The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) is one of the more popular and prestigious events on the annual poker calendar. This can be evidenced from the fact that the top four players each win a purse of over a million dollars in the Main Event. The event was played from January 7 to January 16 at the luxurious Atlantis Resort & Casino in The Bahamas.
The 2011 PCA was won by a little known American player Galen Hall. His share of the prize money was $2.3 million. After the win Halen himself said, “Up until this event, I’ve been a very terrible live tournament player. I have a pretty impressive track record of busting on Day 1.” Hall is 24 years and hails from San Francisco. The most impressive thing about him, prior to this win, is that he has secured admission to Stanford University to study for a master’s degree in business administration. Hall plans to keep up with his studies and hit the live tournament poker circuit as well.
In the heads up Hall battled Chris Oliver. “Battled” is the right word because the contest lasted for over nine hours. Oliver, who is from Florida, picked up a prize of $1.8 million for the second place. The third place prize of $1.35 million went to a PokerStars qualifier Anton Ionel of Romania. Sam Stein of the USA won the forth place prize of $1 million.
The two players just to get left out of the final table were the most exciting. Chris Moneymaker was knocked out in the 11th position. Moneymaker was the first online poker player to make it big on the live tournament circuit. He opened the floodgates of live poker for online players, thus giving live poker tournaments a new lease of life. But after winning the WSOP Main Event way back in 2003, Moneymaker has not done anything of note. To get knocked out in 10th position was a little known female Spanish poker player Ana Marquez (in picture). Ana was at one time chip leader in the PCA and as the last woman standing much was expected from her. The PCA is sponsored by leading online poker room PokerStars.
