Vote Your Favorite Poker Babe

Ladies International Poker Series and Card Player Magazine founded the Women in Poker Hall of Fame (WiPHOF) in 2008. Since then, every year the poker following public eagerly waits to find out which of their favorites get inducted into the Hall of Fame. From now till the end of April poker fans can nominate up to three women who have contributed to the world of poker, giving reasons for their choices.

Not just any female poker player can be indicted to the WiPHOF. There are eligibility criteria to be met. The most stringent of these is that “a candidate must have been active as a player or industry leader for a minimum of 15 years prior to election.” This means that for this year’s induction the player must have started playing poker as far back as 1994. Given that the legal age for playing poker in the USA is 21, the potential inductees should have been born before 1973. The most popular of the “poker babes” today would probably fail this test. Maria Ho, Tiffany Michelle, Lacey Jones, Jennifer Leigh, Evelyn Ng, Jennifer Harman and Erica Schoenberg are some of the female poker players that fans would love to see in the WiPHOF, but none of them have completed the mandatory 15 years.

There are two other conditions that have to be met. One is the obvious contribution to poker “in some significant way”. The other is that the candidate must be a proponent of women’s poker. The female poker players seem to be split on this one with some supporting the idea and others referring to it as sexist. The board of WiPHOF will scrutinize the nominations for eligibility and suitability and come out with a short list by May 11. Then the actual voting will begin. The induction will take place on September 3.

In the last two years the following women have been inducted: June Field, Jan Fisher, Cyndy Violette, Marsha Waggoner, Linda Johnson, Susie Isaacs and Barbara Enright. Barbara is by far the most popular being the only woman in the history of poker to make is to the WSOP Main Event final table. Annie Duke would be the perfect woman to join this illustrious club, but she is ruled out because she does not support women’s only poker.
