It was reported by Poker News that during last weeks WSOPE, Phil Hellmuth had such a meltdown he actually made the female dealer cry because of a mistake she made. The Tournament Director did go to Phil and warn him he would be penalized if he went on. The TD then proceeded to comfort the dealer and play went on for only a few more minutes before the event was called for the night.
This is becoming an often-repeated scene at many live events. It really needs to stop before it gives live poker a bad name. The more kids that watch these outbursts like Phil and even more disgustingly, the performance by Scotty Nguyen at the 50K HORSE event at this years WSOP, the more we’re going to see this. There’s a whole generation of poker players that are learning the game on the Internet and have no clue what table etiquette really is. With role models like Phil, the outlook is bleak.
Considering his past history of being a complete asshole to other players and dealers, I’m curious when someone will finally step up and put him in his place. It’s not good for poker, period. I mean Phil himself has said that his wife puts him in his place all the time. Perhaps one day a Tournament Director will grow balls at least as big as Phil’s wife and actually give him the penalty he so desperately deserves.
