Negreanu Tops All Time Money List
In 2009 Daniel Negreanu, though low on WSOP bracelets, was the leader in the life time poker live tournament earnings. Then early in 2010, fellow professional Phil Ivey took the lead and managed to keep his nose ahead all year. On January 8, 2011, Negreanu managed to hit back and has regained the top spot.
This was as a result of his finishing second in the $100,000 Super High Roller event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Negreanu cashed a cool million dollars taking his life time earnings total to $14.11 million overtaking Ivey’s count of $13.86 million by a mere $250,000. Earlier, in October 2010, Negreanu had narrowed the gap with a fourth-place finish at EPT Vienna. That cash was coincidentally for $251,040 and proved crucial under the circumstances. The most notable wins for Ivey after he took the lead were the over $330k cashes in the WSOP H.O.R.S.E. event and the WPT Bellagio Cup VI.
Coming back to the Super High Roller event at the PCA, it was won by Eugene Katchalov. Negreanu said that Katchalov was easily one of the best players in the world, so losing to him in such a prestigious event was nothing to be embarrassed about. He added in his characteristic style. “I fought really hard but the cards didn’t go my way.” Speaking about his rivalry with Ivey, Negreanu said, “I’m proud of the fact that the finish allowed me to retake Phil Ivey as the number one all-time money winner in tournament poker history. I hope and expect to battle Ivey for that distinction for the next 20 years or so.”
He would probably be right about him and Ivey playing for the next 20 years. Ivey will be 35 this February and Negreanu is only two years his senior. Doyle Brunson is older than both of them put together and raring to go. Hence 20 years is a conservative estimate. The problem is whether the battle would continue to be between Negreanu and Ivey. The next three on the list are Jamie Gold, Peter Eastgate and John Juanda. All three of them are within striking distance and well capable of winning the big events.
The one positive side of this news item is that Negreanu has hit the headlines for playing poker. Over the last few months he filled the poker news portals for calling Annie Duke names or for shaving his body hair.
