Phil Hellmuth Misses Out Again

The WPT World Championship ended at Bellagio in Las Vegas on Saturday April 24. This WPT event is the crowning glory of the World Poker Tour and considered by many to be the equivalent of the Main Event at the WSOP. The great news from the WPT World Championship was not that David Williams won the event, but that Phil Hellmuth failed to win despite making it to the final table.

The achievements of Phil Hellmuth at the poker tables are legend. The most spoken about is that he is the only player to have won 11 WSOP bracelets. But in the eight years of WPT Hellmuth is not won a single WPT bracelet. In the 64 WPT tournaments played, Hellmuth has cashed 13 times and made four final tables but all these mean nothing to him. How desperate Hellmuth is to win a WPT bracelet can be judged from his Twitter messages sent after crashing out from the final table of the WPT World Championship at seventh position.

When there were seven players left, Hellmuth Tweeted, “Now would be a good time to win some huge pots!! Wish me great luck and great skill!!” Less than an hour later it was all over. The next Hellmuth Tweet said, “I am out in 7th place, and feeling crushed. A big dream just died.” A few hours later he wrote, “Tough 2 sleep, way too emotional; 7th place sucks! Depressed, listening to REM’s “Everybody hurts”.” At times like this it is family that counts. “My son Nick heading to prom!! Helping him get dressed and ready turned my day around. Blessed to have him!” Soon Phil Hellmuth was back where he belongs. His last Twitter message said that he was playing the $100 rebuy tournament at Ultimate Bet.

In a month it will be WSOP time and Hellmuth’s other dream will come into play. That is to win his 12th WSOP bracelet and make it more difficult for Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson to catch up. Hellmuth’s last WSOP bracelet came in 2007, which is almost ancient history. Last year Hellmuth entered the WSOP Main Event dressed as Caesar in anticipation of his 12th win. Wonder what antic he will try this year?
