Michael Phelps to Join Doyle’s Room?
Winning 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing has set expectations for what Michael Phelps plans to do next, very high. Stories of the Olympian dabbling in poker for the past few years surfaced, curiosity was piqued when Phelps announced that he wanted to add a World Series of Poker bracelet to his hardware collection, now adding fuel to the fire is a meeting requested by Phelps with poker legend, Doyle Brunson and his son, Todd while visiting Las Vegas.
“What a great feeling it must be to be 23 years old and on top of the world,” said Doyle. “What a nice kid. He had a bunch of his friends from home with him and they were the guests of the Palms Hotel and Casino. I got a call that he was an avid poker fan and wanted to meet me, Todd, and Hoyt Corkins. Jennifer Harman and her husband Marco were also there.”
Speculation that Phelps may soon be joining the Doyle’s Room celebrity player ranks has set the poker world abuzz. Lending credence to the rumors, it seems that Texas Dolly has been giving Phelps some instruction while they spent a good deal of time together at his suite at the Palms.
“Phelps and some of his friends wanted books so I took Super System 1 and 2 to them and they asked all kinds of poker question,” Doyle said. “Michael said all he wanted to do in life, was eat, swim and play poker. We went up to his suite to hang out for a while. His suite had a basketball court, swimming pool, workout room, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. It must have been 15-20 thousand square feet, the nicest one I’ve ever seen.”
Doyle’s Room representatives haven’t denied the claims either, further adding to speculation that a deal may be inked in the near future. With Phelps learning from the very best, it shouldn’t take him long until he realizes yet another dream, taking home a WSOP bracelet.
“Maybe he’s the next Team Brunson celeb,” said a representative from Doyle’s Room. “One this for sure is that he loves poker and is starting his education right at the top with Doyle and his son Todd.”
