Still a Vegas Virgin

I’ve never been to Las Vegas.  For a poker playing enthusiast like myself, that’s almost a crime.

The 2009 WSOP is currently underway, and once again, I try to keep up with all the action via internet and forum gossip…but it isn’t enough.

I WANT TO PLAY TOO!

As I type this, the $40,000 anniversary NLHE game has wrapped up, as well as the PLO $1500 and the Champions Game.  Now, I know I couldn’t measure up to either of those games, but damn, there’s 50+ events to choose from, right?  Starting at $1000 buyin all the way to the $10,000 Main Event…surely I could have played ONE of them.  Right?

Truth be told, I would be scared to death to play ANY of them.  I’m just not that good yet.  But after watching some of the play being done, especially early on in the games, I would enjoy the challenge of competing with the best in the world.  And isn’t what playing in any of the events is all about?  I mean to rub shoulders with the pros, to pit your AK against a stranger’s small pocket pair and raise any flop to get him off it?  And of course the ultimate thrill of trying to bluff out a pro and get them to fold a better hand to you based on your ability to pull it off well.  Not saying I COULD out play a pro…but damn it, I want to try!

Of course, the game is filled with the unknown, uncaring, unrelenting arch angel of LUCK, so who knows, maybe I could have pulled a small miracle and actually cash in a game or two.  (Whatever you do, do not place a bet on me…warning you, you’ll be sorry, and it won’t be MY fault…not this time!)

I know several players that are heading down for at least one or two of the $1500NL events, and I truly wish them all the best in their personal quest for a bracelet.  I’ll do my best to track your play online and rail you from afar.  I even know one player who won a seat to the Main Event…GO GET’EM WES!!  I envy you guys, I truly do.

Although I can only live vicariously through you as you take Sin City by storm, I do wish you all the best in your adventures down there.

Maybe next year, I’ll join you.  God, I can only hope I can.
